Microsoft and Scense: simply a smarter solution

In Microsoft’s New World of Work, people are the key to success. Enabling organizations to respond to the rapid rate of contemporary change means giving people better ways to create, use, share and interpret information. The New World of Work, Microsoft’s analysis of emerging trends and their implications, has four dimensions which represent challenges and opportunities:

  1. create one world of business so organizations remain competitive in a fast-moving global market;
  2. to give people freedom to choose where and when they work;
  3. to evolve with a new workforce that brings with it new attitudes, new skills and new expectations;
  4. and to create the necessary transparency for individuals and organizations to prosper.

This is a real paradigm shift and, to build the IT architecture for this new world, we need to address all four of these dimensions, using the resources we already have. For the mid-sized business that lacks the knowledge and budget to select, implement and manage the complex systems required this has been a tough challenge. Until today. Getting IT right for the recovery
27 July 2010

Never let a serious crisis go to waste … now is the opportunity to do things you couldn’t do before”. So said Rahm Emanuel, President Obama’s Chief of Staff. Well financial institutions have certainly had their crisis and any organization that uses the economic slowdown to upgrade and standardize its IT systems is bound to be far better placed to make a fast recovery when the time is right. The question is, what’s the best way to go about it?

Rotterdam March 2010 - Scense 7 launched
04 March 2010

Scense, the Netherlands’ fastest-growing provider of User Workspace Management solutions, launches Scense Release 7.

Rotterdam, March 2010. The release of Scense 7 marks another major step forward in simplifying the management and delivery of the end-user workspace within virtual and physical Windows desktop environments.

As well as a long list of product enhancements, the new release delivers support for Windows 7 (32 and 64-bit) desktop environments, integration with Microsoft’s App-V 4.6 application virtualization, integration with Symantec Workspace Virtualization 6.1 and a completely redesigned user interface.

Thanks to the new and extremely intuitive Ribbon interface, managing an end user’s workspace, delivering applications and monitoring the user profile becomes very easy to master.”, says Hessel Wellema, Scense product manager. “The new interface will assist in the process of transferring traditional IT department tasks to other business units. And, with design features such as Aero transparency, it also looks very good.

Full integration with the latest releases of Microsoft’s App-V and Symantec’s SWV is a major feature of Scense 7. The new release also further simplifies the management of applications virtualized with App-V and SWV in 32 and 64-bit environments and leverages the implementation of these technologies. As the company’s fast-growing customer base proves, Scense has made application virtualization a viable option for many companies, by making it far easier and faster to adopt. Release 7 marks another major advance in bringing its benefits within the reach of every organization.

Most analysts expect the 2010 agenda of IT managers to be dominated by the migration to Windows 7 and HVD. With Scense 7, personal settings and applications are decoupled from the underlying Windows OS and profile, so that the end user’s workspace is available across Windows platforms. As a result, migrating to Windows 7 or a virtual desktop environment becomes surprisingly straightforward, with the experience for the end user remaining consistent throughout.

Existing customers will be able to download Scense 7 on the Scense website. A trial version is also available.

Scense en DHS Informatisering sluiten reseller overeenkomst
22 March 2010

Scense and Symantec customer success: Mondriaan
21 March 2009

Scense User Workspace Management Creates a Virtual, Centralized Workspace for 20,000 Students

Peter Cornet and his team were wearing out the soles of their shoes managing the 7,000 endpoint estate to the ROC Mondriaan education institute in The Netherlands. Regular physical on-site interventions, manual imaging and provisioning, and other tasks meant this IT manager was almost overwhelmed by the constantly changing, high maintenance end-users and 450 applications. In response, ROC Mondriaan partnered with Scense B.V., one of the Netherlands’ fastest-growing providers of workspace management solutions. The Scense User Workspace Management solution eliminates complexity within the institute’s environment, by managing and delivering applications and desktops transparently together. The Scense dynamic workspace virtualization solution, which works in conjunction with Symantec™ Endpoint Virtualization Suite, has enabled ROC Mondriaan to re-deploy 15 of the 40 staff previously managing endpoints, reduce the time needed to provision a typical 30-endpoint classroom from four days to a few hours, and provide the 20,000 students and 2,500 staff with fast, easy access to data and applications. It’s also secure, compliance, and highly cost effective. So Cornet’s team now have time spare to buy new shoes.

Scense 7.5 complements virtual desktop environment VMware View
13 October 2010

Scense, a leading provider of User Workspace Management software, helps its partners and customers to migrate to VMware View, a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).  The next generation of software, Scense 7.5, speeds up the adoption of desktop and application virtualization. The release addresses some of the major hurdles which hamper IT managers when they face starting a VMware View or ThinApp project. Scense 7.5 automates the migration, simplifies the management of VDI environments and transforms VMware ThinApp into an enterprise solution.

Desktop Migration

“With Scense 7.5 we offer an attractive solution for the costly migration from a physical desktop environment to a virtual desktop environment,” says Koen Bouwers, CEO of Scense.  “Consumerization and virtual desktop infrastructures and applications are major trends in IT and one of the results is that IT managers have to start thinking first and foremost about the users not the equipment.

Personal Workspace

Scense recognises that there is a new generation of users that is no longer content to be dictated to. They want access to their own personal workspace, wherever they happen to be and whatever the time. Corporate and personal personalities and applications are mixed. The Scense solutions puts users in control without annoying restrictions from corporate IT management while at the same time giving IT managers the ultimate authority. Application conflict handling ensures a far more stable user environment and application delivery makes fewer demands on the IT resources.

Bring your Own Computer

The Scense 7.5 release deals with all requirements IT managers are facing when confronted with BYOC. IT service delivery to ‘unmanaged’ devices is ensured. Scense has a solution to prevent data leakage by ensuring that no unauthorized people or processes have access to corporate data on the network or personal device. The user context awareness like user credentials, the type of device and OS version and the location of the user, is taken care of and self-service tooling is in place. In order to block applications running on laptops that for instance have been stolen, remote application management is part of the solution. Scense 7 already dealt with migration to Windows 7 and 64 bits machines, the new software does the same for VMware View or ThinApp applications.

Future of VDI migration

Migrating physical desktop environments to virtual ones is a costly process due to large amounts of unexpected challenges and manual tasks. Scense 7.5 delivers a single, cost-effective, manageable and transparent infrastructure through a three-step process. The process is mostly automated but offers the IT manager the levels of control he needs. The first step is Discover, an automated scan of the desktop environment, user profile data and applications and possible other IT services. The second step is Decide. Decide what profile data, applications and other IT services need to be delivered and import them in the Scense database. The final step is Deliver. In this phase the Scense client is installed on all devices, the user workspaces and applications are delivered.

After a successful migration to VDI, Scense 7.5 simplifies the management of the desktop within the VDI environment by delivering a set of easy workspace management features. The most common workspace management tasks like delivering applications, creating network connections, printers and shortcuts are all available in small, easy to use, wizards. Also regular VDI challenges like localization and follow me printing are addressed.

Compello Premium Partner of Scense
09 December 2010

logo compelloCompello, a provider of professional IT infrastructures, has been made Premium Partner of Scense in The Netherlands. Scense and Compello met at one of the customers of Compello, the Deltion College in Zwolle, a regional educational institute with 16.000 students.The Deltion College was facing a big challenge – they had to offer one central system of various applications and services to a myriad of PC systems, desktops, kiosk PCs and even the own notebooks of their students. The virtual applications and the applications packed with Windows Installer, needed to be managed in a simple way and they had to be distributed to all the different end-users.

 “The Deltion College wanted to facilitate their students by offering them the school applications on their own laptops. However application conflicts had to be prevented to avoid damages. This led us to Scense since their solutions deal completely with these risks. Their unique way of distributing Workspace Environments and Application Distribution turned out to be the solution for this customer and other companies or organizations with such challenges. We therefore want to work with Scence,” says Egbert Seuters, Technical Director of Compello.

“Our philosophies are complementary,” adds Luc Pennings of Scense. “Compello has a lot of experience and knowledge of the health, government and educational sectors in The Netherlands. We were already successful with the first joint projects in the educational world with our innovative solutions.”

The choice of Compello for Scense has also a strategic reason: the Scence product is an addition to the VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) and SBC (Server Based Computing) concept of Compello. In the meantime it has been proven that the Scense solutions not only work for static workspaces, but also for laptops and desktops which are managed by the end-user. The workload of the IT manager is simplified thanks to the unique central management solution for workspaces and it is estimated that management costs are reduced with some 70%. It goes without saying that additional savings can be made on the hardware and licensing fees since staff and students use their own PCs.

Compello is known since 1997 as the specialist in the area of centralisation through virtualisation, with knowledge, capabilities and quality. Compello is always looking to optimise its present solutions and standards. “We are therefore pleased to welcome them as a  Premium partner of Scence,”  says Luc Pennings, VP Sales en Marketing.

Scense recently released Scense 7.5, which complements ThinApp and VMware View implementations. Scense 7.5, speeds up the adoption of desktop and application virtualization. The release addresses some of the major hurdles which hamper IT managers when they face starting a VMware View or ThinApp project.

About Compello

Compello provides professional IT infrastructures, which focus on quality, flexibility and reliability. Always IT and everywhere. Compello views IT as a utility and the company is capable of keeping migrations simple.  There is a clear focus on datacentre, virtualisation and application availability. Compello’s customers are top companies for which carefree ICT is one of the most important success factors.
